Gotcha Day!!

3 years ago today, we legally adopted Makenna into our family.  While we know that God had a plan from her from the very beginning to join our family, we looked forward to making it officially official through the court system and now we cherish and celebrate her special story each and every November 15th.

This will always be one of my absolute favorite pictures of you and Daddy - November 15th, 2010.

Pretty pretty girl!

I was soo worried you would spit up on the judge's robe that day!!

Today we lucked out and had GORGEOUS weather in Milwaukee so we headed to the zoo!  It was Alex's first trip to the zoo and we had a lot of fun.  All the animals were very active!  You, however, were pretty disappointed to find out the train was put away for the season.  You insisted we call Grandpa right away to let him know the train was missing.

Our new double stroller came in handy!

After that, it was on to the Cheesecake factory for lunch!  We took you there after your adoption ceremony was final and we've made it an annual tradition.

Love that little chin!

Saturday you and Mommy celebrated by heading to the Disney Live show downtown

Daddy was at the Badger game and Alex was a little disappointed that he couldn't go with Daddy or with us.  Grandma and Grandpa took good care of him, though!

You were SOOOO excited for the show!

This was your face as the show was starting.....love that I was able to catch a quick picture of it!

Love you, Kennagirl and we are so happy that we GOTCHA!!!

Alexander Brooks - 1 month old

Alexander, you are getting to be such a big boy.  We had your one month check up at the doctor today and you were 9lbs.13.5oz and 21.25" already!  The doctor was very impressed and asked me if I was supplementing breastfeeding with formula, especially with the latching problems you had early on.  Ha - nope, you are getting only the good stuff, which apparently I make with a high fat content.  It won't be long before you have your sister's chunky rolls!

You are generally a pretty chill baby.  You still nap much of the day, but thankfully you are a great sleeper at night, too.  You are sleeping in the swing in our room - we tried your bed and the bassinet for a few nights, but you just weren't having it so we switched to the swing and you instantly started giving us 2-3 hour stretches at night.  The last few nights you've given us a 4-4.5 hour stretch and then a few 3 hour stretches after that, which is WONDERFUL!  You have been getting good at feeding, changing, feeding some more (and then pooping AGAIN and changing AGAIN) and then going back down to sleep.  However, you are quite the GRUNTER!  You keep daddy and I up for awhile while you work to digest and get comfortable - you grunt and grunt and grunt some more.  Eventually you do fall back asleep but sometimes you grunt for over an hour.

You are slowly growing out of your newborn clothes and are starting to fit in your 3 month clothes.  You are officially out of newborn diapers and are into size 1's.  You eat about every 2 1/2 to 4 hours - usually right around 3 hours.

You are certainly a spitter upper but not as bad as your sister was.  It still doesn't seem to bother you so we have held off on any reflux meds at this point.  You are a VERY gassy baby and after dinner you get pretty fussy and your tummy gets very uncomfortable.  Mommy and Daddy usually switch off trying to console you.  We've tried gas drops but I'm not sure how much they help.  Mommy is going to try eliminating some things from her diet to see if that helps.  Usually if we wrap you up in a really snuggly blanket and walk around shushing you and patting your back that settles you down pretty well.

Daddy:  Your daddy amazes me with how good he is doing with the transition to 2 kids.  He is so excited to see you every day when he gets home from work.  He is also sooo good with Makenna and lately has been spoiling her rotten with lots of play time and silly daddy time.  I love to see them play together and laugh together and I look forward to the day when you are big enough to join in, too.  Daddy calls you "Alligator" to which Makenna usually corrects him and says - No!! He is Alex!  Daddy's favorite thing to do with you is snuggle you and sing to you.  Tonight he snuck upstairs after dinner and I caught him rocking you and singing his favorite Better Than Ezra songs to you while listening to the CD.  He used to do the same thing with your sister to calm her down and you both love it!  On Sunday mornings at church, Daddy loves to hold you - he always takes you out of your carseat and snuggles you during the service.

Mommy:  Oh Alex, time is flying WAY too fast for this mama!  Part of me can't believe it has been a whole month already and part of me can hardly remember a day when I didn't hold you in my arms.  I absolutely love spending every waking minute (and sleeping minute I suppose) with you and am very sad to be going back to work already in just a week and a half.   I know it is only a few days a week, but I will miss you more than you could imagine.  I love you SO much and want to bottle up every minute.

I have to keep reminding myself that I was the same way with Makenna- I didn't know if we'd be blessed with another baby so I remember holding on to each moment, afraid for her to grow up - that I'd miss something or that it would be my only chance to enjoy that stage.  Yet I found that with each new stage she just got more and more fun & sweeter and sweeter.  I know the same will be true with you - and I keep reminding myself of that.  But I do know that you will be our last and I forgot how much I LOVE the newborn stage.  I have already put away a few of the outfits you have grown out of and that makes me a little teary eyed, I must say!

I love everything about you - you are starting to recognize my voice more and more and I can get you to smile if you are in the right mood.  I like to say la la la at you and you try to imitate me with your tongue.  I love your baby sneezes and the way you sometimes try to sneeze and can't and the sweetest little aaaaahh comes out - I am still trying to get it on tape.  I secretly love the time we get to spend together just the two of us at 2am.  I hate getting out of bed, but you always make it so worth it - you have the sweetest looks on your face after you eat and you are so snuggly and sweet.  I could do without you puking down my shirt in the middle of the night, but hey, we'll work on that one.  I love you, buddy!

Makenna:  Alex, your sister adores you.  She is sooo sweet with you and does a good job of giving you your space yet always wanting to make sure you are ok.  If she hears you crying, she tells me - "Mama, your baby is crying!" or "Mama, give your baby some of your milk" or "Mama, your baby has a poopy diaper!"  Lately you have been pooping right after I change your diaper to which I like to say "Buudddy, you pooped again!"  Makenna has started mimicking me and saying the same thing - I love the way she says it, it sounds just like when I say it.  Makenna is such a good helper and is so good about getting me whatever I need when I am busy feeding you or changing your diaper.  Your sister thinks you are I are inseparable these days and if she sees me without you, she says "Mama, where's your baby?".  She will tell people we see "look, my mama's baby came out!".  At night, she loves it when I bring you into her room and lay you in her bed with her while I sing you your lullabies.  Alex, you have a great big sister who loves you very much!

Now onto the good stuff... pictures!!

Love the pose here!  And check out those monkey feet!!

After your doctor's appointment today we paid our favorite nurse Theresa from the infertility clinic!  She was SOO excited to meet you!  We also saw the embryologist that took such good care of you when you were frozen and helped to thaw you out!  She may have been the same one that told us to send you and your sister back as I mentioned in this post: http://snowflakebabygirl.blogspot.com/2013/10/dear-baby-boy.html  Ha!  I actually did give her a hard time about that today - I couldn't resist:)

Happy one month birthday baby boy!!

And just for fun....

They do look pretty similar, eh?

Snuggles

Gassy boy

We haven't been successful at transitioning to the crib or bassinet yet so last night when he was out cold I thought I'd try....

That lasted about 10 minutes until Daddy needed to rescue him.  When he is really gassy at night, Daddy snuggles him and he grasps Daddy's fingers as tight as he can.

Poor boy!

Lazy weekend...

This sweet 3am face makes middle of the night feedings much more tolerable...

well, until you get a glimpse of these eyeballs and then I get a little worried we might still be up at 4am...

one of my current favorite outfits...sooo snuggly and aren't those boots the cutest?  They were big sis hand me downs

Snuggling with daddy watching football...they fell asleep until midnight on the couch which meant Mama got a few good hours of sleep in bed!  I just love the way Alex is clinging on to Daddy's hand so tightly.

Milk coma!

Love me some skinny baby legs....how long til those are filled in with chubby little rolls?

Lunch date

For whatever reason when I dropped Makenna off at pre-school this morning she had a REALLY hard time letting me go.  It broke my little heart to have to leave her screaming and crying like that.  But, I did tell her that I would come back to school at lunch and eat lunch with her.

It was sooo fun to be able to get a little glimpse into her day at lunch time.  And Makenna had a good time showing off her new little brother, too:)

Thankfully the departure after lunch didn't have any tears!!

Cookie Beek

Yesterday, Oma and Papa came for their Wednesday visit and they were sooo very kind as to bring Great Grandma Cookie Beek with them!!
Doesn't she look GREAT for almost 95?!?

Alex was such a sweet boy for her!

It warms my heart to see these 2 together.  Going through infertility you always wonder if certain people in your life will make it to meet your little ones IF you ever are so blessed to have them.  I love that Cookie Beek got to share not only in the joy of Makenna but in Alex, too!

My favorite part of spending time with Cookie Beek is to hear all the stories of her growing up and all the memories she has.  Yesterday was no different as she shared what it was like when she had kids and how much things have changed.  We love you Cookie Beek & love to hear all your stories!!

Tuesday night love

Some of you that have been following our blog for awhile might remember Tuesday Night Tom & the first bible study Brad and I were a part of way back when we first got married.  Tom is an amazing teacher and though we don't make it to the Tuesday night study anymore, that group has been such great supporters of us through our infertility journey and such great prayer warriors through it all!

In the past few months, Brad and I have started going to a new church and it just so happens that Mary, the host of the Tuesday night group (the lovely women pictured above loving on little Alex)'s daughter goes to our church and we have become really good friends over the past few months.  Jen is soo sweet and every Sunday after church we go to DD with her family and another family from church.  Mary & Kent like to pop in from time to time to see them and invited us to make a guest appearance at this past Tuesday night's study.  Though a lot of the faces were new, there were a few that still remembered us and it was so great to be able to share Makenna and Alex with them!  They showered us with gifts & invited us to share our special story in front of the group.  Thank you Tuesday night crew!!!  We are sooo thankful for all the prayers and support over the years!!

Making birthday cupcakes for Grandpa today!

Alexander's birth story

Alex, your birth story isn't nearly as exciting as your big sister's, but that is TOTALLY fine with this mama!  We had a scheduled C Section for Monday, October 14th at 8am.  The doctor told us to get there around 6am so we had Grandma and Grandpa come over early to take Makenna to school.

Here I am getting ready to go to the hospital.  I woke up that morning looking at my belly thinking it seemed way smaller than Makenna's and guessed that you would be a 6lb baby, Alexander.

Heading up to Labor and Delivery

It's go time!

Getting prepped for surgery...we waited about an hour for the docs and anesthesiologist to be ready.  Before we knew it, it was time! Daddy prayed a sweet prayer over us and they wheeled me back to the operating room.

I told Daddy I needed pictures to document this special day and he sat in front of the mirror and snapped a bunch of pictures of himself in his bunny suit once I got wheeled back to the operating room.  Ha Ha!

Spinal is in, drugs are kicking in and mommy and daddy are ready to meet you!!  After a lot of tugging, and then needing to cut my incision a little wider to fit your big head out, you were here.

At 8:46am, all 7lbs 8oz of you entered the world - I guess mama was a little off in her 6lb guess!

Daddy couldn't take a picture of our first sight of you, but it is one I will never forget - the doctor draped you over the "curtain" for a split second and I was instantly in love.  You had a head FULL of hair and were covered in goo!

Once they took you to clean you up down the hall I heard you scream and scream and scream.  It was music to my ears as I knew it meant you were a healthy little boy.  I cried tears of joy as I sat there in the operating room waiting for daddy to bring you back to see me.

I'll never forget the proud look on daddy's face as he brought you back to see me.  He had the BIGGEST smile on his face and was just so happy.

The nurse offered to take our first family picture.... I just love Daddy's smiley eyes in this one!

After you were born, Daddy brought you up to the Mom & Baby floor where they checked you all out and cleaned you up.  Mommy's friend Amy came in to work for a few hours that morning just to take care of you!  It was sooo very sweet of her and meant the world to us!

Amy was even nice enough to give you this handsome comb-over!

Daddy took a whole bunch of pictures of you and brought them down to me in the recovery room so we could finally pick a name for you.  We had it narrowed down to Alexander, Brooks and/or Matthew - any combination of the 3.  While we really wanted to call family and tell them the news, we knew the first thing they would ask was your name so we held off on calling anyone until we picked a name.

We decided right away you definitely did not look like a Matthew....I really wanted a name with meaning and Matthew means "God's gift" - which you truly are, but unfortunately you were just not a Matthew.

After about a half hour of back and forth, we finally decided:

Alexander Brooks Best

Daddy headed back up to be with you while mommy stayed in the recovery room a little longer.  We each made our phone calls to family to finally let them know the big news!  I think some of them were getting nervous since it was almost 11am by that time.

Love this one of your frown face!  Too cute!

It was a BEAUTIFUL day the day you were born!

Welcome to the world Alexander Brooks!  We love you sooooo much!

Serious cuteness

Thanks Great Auntie Sharon and Uncle John for the ADORABLE Tigger outfit

It makes him smile

Thanks Joanna for this super cute outfit, too!  It fits him perfect and he is sooo stinkin' cute in it!

The things you say....

Daddy and I keep commenting that we really need to write down some of the things you say....

Your "Kenna-isms":

-You are very familiar with how the DVR works and when you see a preview for something you want to watch (usually next week's Sophia the First) you ask us if we will "tape it on" for you.
-You are convinced that you have a baby girl in your belly, too, and that her name is Ariel
-"I'm so big to do that" - whenever you do something you think is a "big girl" thing
- say "ok?" after everything....as in -  after a story we are going to watch TV, ok?
-You are obsessed with your new princess underpants.  There is one pair that is white with green trim and it has Ariel, Jasmine and Rapunzel on them and you will ask me every single day if they are clean and if you can wear them.  If I do the laundry, as soon as it is done you want to put them on immediately and will dig through the dryer to find them
-You have started to pick out your own outfit and if I let you, you would wear your 2 princess shirts every single day
-About - for some reason you like to add the word "about" to a lot of your sentences
-You want to know where everyone lives.... even things like your swim class - Mama, where does my swim class live?
-You like to put the emphasis on the last syllable of things or on a strange syllable..... its hard to type that out, but words like caterpillar, brewer game or butterfly are some of our favorites to hear you say
-When Mommy and Daddy are in the same room and I tell you to ask Daddy if you can do something.... color, watch TV, go outside, etc., you will ask him (with me standing right there) and then tell me - Mama, Daddy said I could, all excited as if I didn't hear him say it.
-You are a CHATTERBOX!  Though I must admit, I love it - I love to hear the things your little mind comes up with and I could listen to you just about all day long.... well, except at nap time when you are supposed to be sleeping and I need a rest too.
-You always want to know what is next - you wake up in the morning asking where we will be going, what we will be doing and who we will see.
