My little bully...

I was debating posting this on the blog.... but, I want to remember the sweet times with the more trying times, too.
 
Yes, it seems my sweet, caring, loving, silly Kenna girl is a bit of well, a bully...
 
Not only did we get this lovely note from her teacher on Thursday, but it was accompanied with a mid-afternoon phone call letting me know that after this incident, there were 2 more that day.  Oh boy.  Never a phone call you like to get from your 2 1/2 year old's teacher. 
 
I was actually a bit surprised to hear from her teacher - we have had nothing but very nice notes lately about how polite she is and how sweet she has been to her friends:
"Today, Makenna was very nice and asked her classmate "will you be my friend?""
"Makenna was very good about using her manners - lots of pleases and thank you's today"
"Makenna did not want to go on the potty but she did say "thank you for changing my diaper" when I was through changing her today."
 
Well, it appears we have regressed a bit.  Daddy was kind enough to help me with pick up on Thursday so we could have a little "sit down" with her.  I seriously wish I could have gotten the conversation on tape because looking back it was pretty funny.  She sat so nicely, knowing she was in trouble and just kept saying "ok, daddy".  She knew right away why we were sitting down with her and confessed to it all right away.  Daddy told her no trip to the library (I don't think I've ever wrote about her obsession with the library, but yes, we honestly go there 4 times a week - after church on Sunday, after bible study on Tuesday, on Thursday after school and usually one trip to the Sussex library, too - the girl is obsessed with DVD's and will get the same Veggie Tales ones over and over, many times not even watching them before we have to take them back.  She does love to watch them, but most times she is content just lining them all up on the living room floor and telling us who is on all of them.).  So, no library was kind of a big deal.  She just replied with an "ok".  Then daddy told her that she was not allowed to buy anything at the Disney store (we were heading there on Friday night so she could pick out a princess dollie).  I told her that instead of buying a princess dollie, it might be a good idea to buy her friend a box of band aids to make her feel better after the car incident.  Her response - "ok, mommy."  I was actually surprised there weren't any tears or anything.  She was very calm and listened very well.  Every time daddy would ask her why she did it she would just say "Hmmmmm."  I wanted to laugh, but did a good job keeping a straight face. 
 
Saturday we headed to the Disney store.  I packed up her quarters and she was all set to buy some band aids for her friend.  She actually did really good.  The Disney store doesn't actually sell band aids so I brought some along and slipped them to the cashier when we walked in.  We let Makenna look around and she of course grabbed every princess dollie she could find.  When I told her it was time to put them all back because she didn't have any money for them she did it without even a peep.  "Ok, mommy"  So I asked her what we needed to buy with her money and she said "princess band aids for Sophia!"  So we went up to the cashier, she handed her the money and said - "do you have any band aids?".

Sunday night we made cards for her friends to aplogize to them for hitting them
And I was hoping that would make for a bully-free day on Monday. 
 
We got to school and she was all excited to give her friend the band aids & the cards. 
 
I'd love to say that this plan worked and she was an absolute angel in school today but... c'mon the girl is headed toward 3 and starting to act more and more like it everyday:) 
 
On the bright side, there was only one victim today:) 
 
Poor thing was so wiped out after school today she totally dozed off on the ride home - which she NEVER does! 
 
Daddy had another little sit down with her again tonight.  Here's to hopin' for a NICE note in her folder on Thursday!!!

Birthday Fun!

Sunday Makenna and I had a little girl's get away up north for a little birthday fun!  She was such a good girl all day.  I waited until the morning to tell her we were going to see her cousins and she was SO excited.  She kept telling me - "mommy, I'm gonna be so silly with my cousins!"  We got up to my sister's house just in time for a little rough housing, giggling and playing before heading to our party.

Feeling especially blessed.....

Today I'm feeling especially blessed.  As I watch the huge snowflakes fall out my window, I am in awe of God's blessings in our life today & always. 
 
I am blessed to be able to stay home a few days a week with this little sweetie:
 
I am blesssed to be able to spend cuddle time, learning about the latest characters on Sophia the First so that later on when Makenna tells daddy all about it, I can let him know what in the heck she is talking about:)
 
I am blessed that during said cuddle time, I got the BEST surprise ever to find my driveway being shoveled & snowplowed, courtesy of not just a client, but a sweet friend and prayer warrior to us.  Thank you Sue!  You have blessed us in more ways than you realize.
 
I am blessed to get random texts throughout each and every day from my dear friend Rachel, letting me know that she is covering me in prayer and sharing with me what God is teaching her, too.
 
I am blessed to have a husband that works his tail off - slaving crazy hours this time of year so that he can provide for our family.  He is an awesome daddy, husband, businessman and friend.  Thank you, daddy, for always dropping everything when you know we need you - for doctors appointments, trips to school to have a sit down with your bullying, sweet girl (that is another blog post altogether) and special dinner dates with us at your office on nights when you are swamped with work but want to make sure your baby girl knows how much you love her. 
 
I am blessed to have such sweet friends - that even if it has been months since we've talked, we can pick up the pieces like we haven't missed a beat and have the best conversations (great talking to you last night, Deirdre!)
 
I am blessed to be carrying the littlest snowflake, whose heart is now beating and facial features are starting to form.  At just 6 weeks, you are such a miracle and such a joy to our family.  I look forward to keeping you warm and safe the next 8 months, sweet baby.  And I look forward to teaching you about all the ways that we were blessed because of you.

Roller coaster...

I almost forgot what a roller coaster this infertility thing is....
 
Monday, we came to a crashing low after a serious bleeding/clotting episode.  I thought for sure that was it - it was over.  I was trying to be so positive and really trust in God, but I really was caught off guard and let my mind think the worst.  Brad kept telling me not to worry, to wait until we could talk to a nurse.  I knew he was right, but I couldn't help but worry.  I wasn't ready for this.  I was just finally starting to let down my guard a little and actually believe I was carrying another little miracle life inside me. 
 
I actually didn't even call anyone that night - not my mom, not my sister, noone.  I didn't want to talk about it, thinking that would make it more real.  I didn't want to hear the worry in my own voice.  I texted a few close friends to fill them in and ask them for prayer and that is exactly what they did - they covered me in prayer.  And it was exactly what I needed.
 
Fast forward to Tuesday morning and a somewhat worrisome call from the nurse - it was a good news/bad news kind of a call.  Bleeding can be ok, but clots can be bad.  The fact that I wasn't cramping was good but we decided to check out my hcg and go from there.  This wouldn't really be able to tell me anything but bad news - if it was not continuing to double, we had issues.  If it was continuing to double, that was a good sign, but still wouldn't tell us for sure.
 
Thankfully I got the call from my nurse by 11am on Tuesday that my numbers did continue to double and were 5834 (they should have been 3200 the day before and 6400 the next day).  Phew - that was at least a good sign.  She could sense the worry in my voice and agreed to let me come in for an early ultrasound the next day.
 
That night I was just skimming through random verses in the gospel of John and came across John 14: 1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled.  you believe in God; believe also in me."  I clung to that verse and honestly, I slept like a rock that night.  I woke up "feeling" pregnant and was actually looking forward to my ultrasound that morning.  A part of me knew that everything was going to be fine. 
 
We showed up at the doctor and were surprised to find our favorite nurse working.  She came into the ultrasound room with us and explained to us what they were looking for - that there could be nothing in my uterus and that would obviously mean one of those clots was the baby:(  Scary!  She said that we wouldn't likely see a heartbeat since I was only 5 weeks / 4 days. 
 
The doctor came in and still I really felt this peace.  We took a look and instantly saw the littlest snowflake:)  She made me hold my breath so they could get a good view and there it was - the little flicker of a heartbeat. 
 
 
 
I must say that while infertility robs you of a lot of joy- we have been very fortunate to be able to experience this little life at such early stages.  Most women never get to see a picture of their baby at 5 days or 5 weeks - most need to wait until the 10 week ultrasound.  We are feeling very blessed that we have been able to "meet" this little one already on several occasions.  Needless to say, we are back at the top of the roller coaster ride hoping that the ride evens out for awhile. 
 
I actually really needed to see that little heartbeat to confirm that yes, our prayers are being answered, and yes, this IS real.  While I am working at trusting God, I think there is a part of me that feels like this was all too easy.  Last time around there was WAY more heartache - it took us 4 years before God brought Makenna to us.  I think I really just expected that this would be harder - that it would take more work.  Not that it has been easy, there were certainly set backs with the cyst that wouldn't go away, the surgery, the endo, etc.  But all of those setbacks were answers to prayers - that God would make sure my body was 100% ready for a baby before we went ahead and transferred our last little hope.  Maybe that is why God keeps banging me over the head with the Trust in God - no, this journey to baby number 2 won't be as hard as the first one, but Trust in me, my child, and use the things I taught you the first time around to really just enjoy this blessing!
 
Thank you, God, for sparing us more heartache and blessing us with this little bonus baby!

Disney on Ice

I convinced Daddy that he needed a special valentines date with his girls and suggested Disney on Ice.  We thought Makenna would like it and boy.... she LOVED it!  I just loved seeing the joy in her eyes tonight as she got to watch all her Disney faves.  She was so grateful and kept saying - "Thank you mommy and daddy for taking me to see the Disney castle and all the Disney princesses."  Thank you, Kenna-girl for making more special memories with us.  We love you to pieces!

The first half was mostly all princesses.  There were a lot of "wow's!" and "look, mommy!" and "look, daddy!".  My favorite was "look mommy there is Nemo just like I see on my TV!"  Precious.

She REALLY wanted one of the princess dollies they were selling but they were atrociously priced.  Here I am trying to tell her if she smiles nice for the camera we can go look at them..... What a stinker!  She refuses to smile for any pictures.  And no, we didn't buy the overpriced dollies.  We told her we could go to the Disney store later this week and pick out some presents for her friend's birthday party and she can pick out a little prize then.

Cousin fun!

This weekend Makenna's cousins came down to visit.  I made the mistake of telling her on Monday they were coming and she has been crying for them to come all week.  It was so worth the wait though.  They showed up on Saturday afternoon just before she fell asleep for her nap so we all laughed as we listened to her talk to her imaginary friends before she drifted off to sleep.  When she woke up it was pure chaos in my house.  It was awesome:)  Makenna just kept squealing - "Mommy, I'm being so funny with my cousins!"  She loves them SO much!!

The wait was REALLY long at the Friday's inside Miller Park for dinner, but the kids did SO good!  We had so much fun with them this weekend! 
 
 
We woke up this morning to more running around and silliness with the cousins.  We celebrated Drew's 10th birthday with a little morning coffee cake and candles.

I'm having a baby.....

Just so you know:) 
 
Ha!  I'm starting to really get pretty excited.  I really feel like I need to pinch myself, that this can't really be true, but yes, yes it is.  I'm having a baby!!!!!!!!! 
 
Just to update you on the thyroid stuff.  My doc put me on a low dose of thyroid hormone (25 mcg) once a day to get my levels back down (which is actually back up - it is backwards in thyroid world, a high number means your thyroid is under-producing/underactive so you need to take synthetic thyroid to get your level up but your number/levels down).  Makes perfect sense, right?  I'll go back in to my RE in 4 weeks to get it checked again.  I also go to my Endocronologist in 6 weeks to make sure we are monitoring everything.  The more people I talk to the less worried I am. It doesn't seem to be all that common.  It is not an ideal situation, but thankfully we have caught it and are taking steps to remedy it. 
 
In the meantime....... I AM HAVING A BABY!!!!!!! 
 
I really feel like this is our "bonus baby" so I think that is what I'm going to start calling it.  When we were trying for Makenna I would have never imagined that God would doubly bless us with a second child from this set of embryos.  So, thank you, Lord for our little bonus baby:) 
 
And for those of you that forgot about my little fortune from January 27th - yup, a small (actually very tiny) gift can  bring joy to not only our whole family but the entire family of believers.  Thank you all for your prayers and for rejoicing with us!
 
 
I just realized that this is the prayer I literally got on my knees and prayed right after the transfer (in the bathroom at the clinic of all places, so yes, literally right after the transfer).
 
Ephesians 3: 14-21
For this reason I kneel before the Father,  from whom His WHOLE FAMILY in heaven and on earth derives its name.  I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

And no, I didn't bring my bible with me to the bathroom - thanks to an AWESOME couple of ladies (thanks Erin & Elizabeth) that I studied & memorized verses with years ago, this little nugget is lodged in my head and I love it when the Holy Spirit brings it to mind at moments like these.

Trust... Trust... Trust....

Well, it is a good news/bad news kind of a day.  The nurse just called to tell me my hcg levels doubled and are up to 411 which is great.  Bad news is they tested my thyroid and that is elevated to the high end of the normal range, which may cause an increased chance of miscarriage.  I am waiting to hear back from my endocrinologist to see what she wants to do about it.  I'm guessing they will put me on a low dose of thyroid meds, but I don't really know what any of that means. 

Just to back up a bit, I have a family history of thyroid issues.  When I got my diagnosis of high FSH they tested my anti-microsomal levels and they came back through the roof.  I had no idea what this meant at the time (I was convinced I was going to die - ha!), but later found out that I have Hashimoto's Thyroditis.  Which for the most part means not much - I have thyroid nodules that my endocrinologist monitors every 6 months or so along with my thyroid levels.  The summer after we got our diagnosis I ended up getting a nodule biopsied, but it came back normal.  It was a HUGE scare to say the least.  I am thankful that they have been keeping an eye on it but of course now I am so scared that my levels are elevated at the worst possible time. 

Trust in God.  I should have known there was more coming when God was banging me over the head with that Trust thing on Sunday:)  There is nothing I can do at this point but educate myself and make sure I am doing everything I humanly can for this child.  The rest is in God's hands.  As Makenna just told me - "Mommy, don't cry.  Trust in God."  Yes, statistics may put me into that "more likely to miscarry bracket" but you know what - I've said it before and I'll say it again.  If this child is in God's will, there is a 100% chance they will make it.  Trust in God.  Trust in God.  Trust in God. 

Please, keep praying for us!  Pray for peace.  Pray that we would trust.  Pray that the doctors would advise us well.  Pray that we would not be fed lies from the evil one, but rather that we would find comfort in God's truth. 

Ok, I have to laugh at this one.... Makenna just brought me a yellow Mike & Ike & told me "don't be sad, mommy, this yellow treat will make you feel better." 
 
She then decided we would both feel better if she had one too so she proceeded to get yellow Mike & Ike after yellow Mike & Ike - one for each of us to make me feel better:) 
 
 
Thank, you Kenna-girl.  You sure are my gift of happiness and a great reminder that God is sovereign and His will is perfect.  We are so very blessed!

Trust in the Lord.....

So, everywhere I turned today, this is the theme I heard over and over.  On the radio after getting my blood draw, in the car as I sat and watched the sunrise parked at a park just me and God, all the songs at church this morning, the sermon...... on and on.  I know I've heard this before and I know I fail to trust Him too often.  I'll be honest, this week I didn't do a very good job trusting in Him.  I know that His plans are perfect and His plans are good but I couldn't help but shake the feeling that this really didn't work, that this miracle baby wasn't to be.  But God is a God of trust.  He is worthy of our trust and He has proven that in my life over and over and over again.  And here I am, pregnant again and blessed beyond our wildest dreams.  Now, even if this hadn't worked I know I can trust Him.  But how wonderful to be able to rejoice today in His blessings!  So today, I am going to once again trust Him.  100%. 
 
We are not out of the woods - I know this full well.  Some people may even question why we would share this news with the whole world so early on - that we are crazy, what if something happens?  All I know is that this day, God is being glorified and prayers of thanks are going up all over for the blessing He has given us, for the miracle He has performed in our lives once again.  Had we kept this all to ourselves, there would be no glory, there would be no praising.  Who am I to keep this all a secret?  Will we carry this baby in our arms in 9 months?  All I can do is hope and pray that He would continue to bless us... I know I will continue to trust in Him and in His plan for us.  He has made that abundantly clear to me today;)
 
So, now for the details of what's next - today's beta was 199 (anything over 100 is good).  The number should double every 48 hours so we'll go back in on Tuesday to make sure it is going up.  If all looks good from there, we will schedule a 7 week ultrasound to check on the baby's heartbeat and from there - we graduate to my OB/GYN.  All the meds will continue through the 7 week ultrasound, so continue too pray for my poor tushy.  Please continue to pray that the baby would continue to develop and grow.

One more sleep.....

For all you snowflake stalkers out there..... you know who you are, welcome to my world. 
 
Yes, this wait stinks!!  Can you even imagine going through this 2 week wait every month for YEARS?!?  Welcome to the world of an infertile.  It stinks!!  I definitely do NOT miss this part. 
 
I try to keep super busy to avoid the following: 
-getting my hopes up
-over analyzing every twinge in my belly, squishing my boobs 100 times a day to try to figure out if they are swollen or sore and then wondering if they are the tiniest bit sore if it is from an actual pregnancy or all that said squishing
-being tempted to pee on a stick (no, I haven't and no I won't... nothing good comes of it - if it is negative - is it really or just too early?  If it is positive - how positive is it?  I need numbers, baby!)
-fearing
-hoping
-dreaming
-fearing
-hoping
-dreaming. 
 
It is definitely a roller coaster ride.  Thanks for riding with me.  And no, I have
thing to report.  No symptoms.  As Makenna would say "Nope. Nuffin'." 
 
Which means of course, absolutely nothing since it is so very early.  Keep in mind that most women are still downing margaritas at this point in their pregnancy:) 
 
I will say that it has snowed every day (with maybe the exception of one) since this baby has been thawed and transferred.  Coincidence?  I hope not:) 
 
One more sleep and we will know.  I have millions of mixed emotions that I will wait to sort through until I have an answer tomorrow.  I just can't let myself go there until then. 
 
So, Hi Ho Hi Ho it's back to work I go!

Our little cover girl.....

 
Snowflakes contacted us a few weeks ago telling us they had a super cute picture of Makenna in a little pink dress and that an Adoption Magazine was hoping to use it for the February cover (they thought she looked very valentine-ish).  After checking out the magazine a little, we found the magazine seemed pretty reputable and we would love to be able to spread a little more awareness about embryo adoption since this magazine really doesn't focus on it.  There is a blurb I wrote that is supposed to be on the inside cover along with another picture, but the editor has been a little slow in forwarding me the link.  It is an online only magazine and since we don't subscribe to it, I can't peek in to see it until she sends me the link. 
 
Once I get it, I'll be sure and post it so you can see what it says!

Why Embryo Adoption?

I've had a few people this week ask us how we chose embryo adoption so I figured it might be a good time to get our story down on "paper". 
 
As I look back over our journey, I can see how God led us here and how He used the tough times to teach us how to rejoice that much more in the good times.  It all started for us back in the fall of 2005 when we started TTC.  We planned a big trip to Hawaii to watch the Badgers play thinking we needed one last big vacation before we welcomed kids into the picture.  Hmmmm, fast forward 2 more years of trying, tests, failed IUI's, frustrations, no explanations and we found ourselves back in Hawaii for Thanksgiving, 2007.  We needed a break.  We needed hope.  We were getting ready to start our appointments and next round of testing with the "big dogs" - the Reproductive Endocrinologists (RE's) and we needed some time away from it all. 
 
On this second trip to Hawaii, we found ourselves at Makena Beach
 
And there, I think God started to plant seeds and get us ready for the journey before us.  As we were leaving Makena Beach that day, I remember telling Brad that if we ever were so fortunate to be blessed with a baby girl I wanted to name her Makenna.  He agreed that he loved the name:) We found out later the name means "gift of happiness"
 
In my prayer journal the next day, I let myself continue dreaming as I jotted this in the margins... Makena Joy Best
I was reading about Joy that day in my bible and I thought it sounded perfect:)  We later added an n (mainly so people could pronounce it) and changed the middle name to Lee, but that is another story for another day. 

 
I also prayed alot on that trip that God would help us to draw appropriate lines as to what we were and weren't willing to do for a baby.  (ok, this might sound creepy to those of you that have never gone through infertility - I'm not talking about stealing a baby or anything like that, dont' worry!)
 
I'd love to say that we headed back from Hawaii full of hope and totally refreshed, but I very vividly remember sobbing on the descent into Milwaukee telling Brad I didn't want to go back to reality.  It was tough. 
 
A few months later, I feel like God really started to answer our prayers with signs.  At the time I didn't fully understand what it meant, but looking back now.  Wow!! 
 It was a REALLY cold January night in 2009 and Brad and I were driving to support a friend that was literally "freezin' for a reason" to raise awareness for the hungry & homeless in our community at the annual Waukesha Jamboree.  I can't recall why we were in 2 separate cars, but we were.  We got lost (as we always do in Waukesha) and I started listening to a sermon on the radio by Pete Briscoe.  Keep in mind that had we not been in 2 separate cars, I would not have been listening to this because my dear sweet husband does not let me touch those radio dials:)  ha! And had we not gotten lost, I also probably wouldn't have heard it:) I tuned in mid-sermon and all I heard was biblical reference after biblical reference to embryos and the sanctity of life.  I started to tear up.  This had been on my heart lately as we were getting ready for our meetings with the RE's and we needed to decide if we would proceed with IVF at this point if they continued to be unable to come up with a diagnosis.  I had been praying to God over and over to help us discern what was next.  I continued listening and as we pulled into our destination, I rolled down my window and told Brad to head on in, that I wanted to listen to the end and that I would meet up with him.  I kid you not, as I sat there listening to verse after verse confirming that life was sacred, no matter how small FIREWORKS started to go off in front of me.  Seriously, fireworks!  I sobbed.  Now, the sermon was actually about abortion but at the time I didn't know that or hear that - I just kept hearing embryo over and over and I knew God was speaking to me somehow, but didn't know how.  I honestly was afraid - I was afraid this was shutting the door to what could be one of our only options not even realizing it was, in fact, opening a door to one of the greatest blessings ever!
 
The fireworks incident did help us both to really sit down and discuss what lines we needed to draw if IVF did end up being the suggested option from the doctors.  Just to fill in some details for those of you reading that maybe aren't familiar with IVF (hmmm, that assumes anyone is still reading:)) the medical goal of IVF is to get as many eggs from the woman (within what is safe for her body) and fertilize them all.  It is a numbers game - not all will fertilize, not all will continue to grow and once transferred, not all will implant.  In a good cycle, 10 are retrieved, 8 fertilize and 4 make it to day 5 with 2 to transfer and 2 to freeze.  Anyway, we had decided that we were not comfortable creating more embryos than we could honestly plan on using.  What if we had 4 and transferred 2 and got pregnant with triplets?  We didn't want to feel like we had to use the remaining 2 and we certainly were not comfortable discarding them.  (keep in mind that at this point we had never heard of embryo adoption so that thought process of would we or wouldn't we give the rest up for adoption never came up in our conversations).  The problem we ran into is that every RE we discussed this with (and there were 3) told us that while they would honor our wishes, they did not recommend limiting the number created because a) it would significantly reduce our chances of getting pregnant and b) it would be much more expensive! 
 
Oh, God - why, oh, why us?  I was honestly more confused than ever. We ended up choosing an RE and before getting overly anxious about what we would do next, we had another workup done on me.  We had assumed this was just a formality and that everything would come back fine as I had already had all the tests done at my OB's office years earlier.  Boy, were we wrong.  We came to find out later that one critical test - the FSH test which NEEDS to be done on day 5 to get valid results was done on day 25 at my OB's office.  And of course, the results that came back were heartbreaking.  April 16, 2008 is a day that will forever be etched in my memory. We headed to the RE's office to go through our test results and discuss next steps.   An FSH level of 10 or less is considered "normal".  Mine was a 31.  I was a young (well, 29 year old) girl with really old eggs.  Boo!  The only thing I recall our doctor telling us that day was that she suggested we use donor eggs if we wanted to carry a pregnancy or look into domestic or international adoption.  I was numb.
 
We headed home and just sobbed in each other's arms.  This is NOT where God was leading us - not to a dead end in terms of genetic children!  I was angry.  Brad was even angrier.  I vaguely remember frantically paging through one of my infertility books for the chapter on high FSH to see what it said about options.  Embryo adoption caught my eye, but I was still in such a state of grieving that it wasn't until a few weeks later that I was ready to let my mind and heart go there. 
 
For the next few weeks & months I GRIEVED the loss of a genetic child - every little girl sees her husbands baby picture and dreams of a child that will look just like him or dreams of a child with her eyes.  I needed to let go of that dream.  And in time, I did.  I'll be honest even after we decided to go down the path of embryo adoption I still cringed every time I heard someone look at a child and say...wow, so and so looks JUST like mommy!
 
Eventually, Brad and I picked ourselves backed up and decided to move forward.  I had REALLY wanted to carry a baby and embryo adoption was looking more and more interesting to me every day.  The more I read, the more excited I got.  I researched, read, followed along on other's blogs and decided that maybe, just maybe, that was where God was calling us.  I started to think back to the fireworks and a part of me knew that THIS was it. 
 
I'll be honest, Brad took a little more time to get there.  I think he was more afraid of the "newness" of it all and all the uncertainty involved.  By early July Brad was on board and I was given the task of researching options for agencies, etc.  I had narrowed it down to NEDC and Snowflakes and after much praying and discussing the pros and cons of each, we decided to move forward with Snowflakes. 
 
Right around this time, I joined our local RESOLVE infertility support group.  This could be another whole blog post on the blessings that flowed from this, but for now let's just say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.  There was something so comforting about talking with women that knew EXACTLY what you were feeling & going through. 
 
We chose Bethany Christian Adoptions to do our local homestudy and once that was done, we proceeded with the paperwork necessary for Snowflakes.  By November of 2008 we were matched with our first match!  The way Snowflakes worked is that for the application fee we were guaranteed up to 3 family's embryos, if needed. 
 
We fell in love with our very first match - we were sure that this was God's plan for us and that it just had to work.  The paperwork took a little longer than we hoped and our first transfer was scheduled for March 5, 2009.  It was January, 2009 that I had met Rachel at one of our support group meetings.  I still remember that day so clearly.  She almost didn't come to the meeting because she thought we were going to be a bunch of crabby old hags sitting around complaining - ha!  I remember her heart for God and His plans for her came through so clearly as she talked at that first meeting.  She wanted to share what God was doing in her struggles and I loved her boldness to do just that.  She was also seriously considering embryo adoption (the only other gal in the group that was) and so we hit it off from the start. 
 
The night before our first transfer, I remember sitting in my living room with 20 of my closest friends & family lifting up our upcoming procedure to God.  I remember being SO very certain that this would work. 
 
Needless to say, when I found out 12 days later that I was miscarrying, I was in shock.  How could this be God?  Did you forget the fireworks?  Why oh why more heartache???  Thankfully, it was Rachel that helped me pick up the pieces and turn to God instead of away from Him.
 
God did a lot in me and through me that summer.  We were matched with another family in May, 2009 and the wait for paperwork and blood work and all the other fun stuff was longer than we would have hoped.  In the meantime, our support group was growing and women were getting pregnant.  Rachel and I had started up a bible study with many of these women that, had I gotten pregnant, we would have never been able to start.  There were many blessings that came out of that heartache, but the best of all is the little girl sitting in front of me playing on my IPad as I sit and type this and the precious life that HOPE is implanting in my uterus this very minute:)  On September 5, 2009 we did our next transfer, transferring 2 of the 3 embryos we adopted from our "Texas Fan Club" and on June 2, 2010 we were blessed beyond our wildest dreams!
 
As I read back over my prayer journal, I see a recurring theme over and over.  In my 8th grade drama play we sang a song that I never knew would have been such a critical verse in my life's story - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  Seek His will in all your ways and He shall direct your path."  Proverbs 3: 4-5
Over and over, I tell God in my journal that I know His plans are perfect and right.  Over and over I give Him my trust.  Why over and over?  Because I'm human and I kept taking it back:) 
 
Embryo adoption was and is the perfect option for our family.  Shortly after Makenna was born I remember contemplating that if someone asked me if I could either have a genetic miracle baby next or have the one remaining embryo join our family, which would I choose.  With no hesitation whatsoever I would choose this remaining embryo.  There are a million different reasons - a) it is a life already created; b) it would be a genetic link to Makenna; c) have you seen how cute this little girl is?  our genes could never compare:); d) I never EVER flinch when someone tells a child they look just like their parents - it really just doesn't matter to me anymore - God took that from me; e) we are all adopted sons and daughters of God; f) I really truly feel like God hand picked these embryos just for us & froze them until His time; g) ok, I'll stop here before I'm tempted to actually type out all 1 million.  ha! 
 
I'll leave you all with these precious gifts of life......
